About Pushya

Pushya lies from 3°20′ to 16°40′ Cancer and is ruled by Saturn. Its deity is Brihaspati, the teacher of the gods, and its symbol is a cow's udder, the image of nourishment freely given; it is also shown as a flower or a circle. The name means “to nourish”. Pushya is widely regarded as the most auspicious of all the nakshatras.

Here Saturn's steadiness meets Jupiter's wisdom in the Moon's own sign, and the result is care that lasts. Pushya is classed as light (kshipra), and it is so favourable for most beginnings that Guru Pushya and Ravi Pushya, when it falls on a Thursday or Sunday, are sought out for purchases and new starts. Traditionally it is not chosen for marriage.

Padas and navamsa

Four quarters of 3°20′

Each pada falls in a navamsa sign, used to read the D9 chart and to colour the nakshatra for anyone whose Moon or ascendant sits there.
