About Shani

Shani, the son of Surya and Chhaya, is Shanaishchara, “the one who moves slowly”. It takes about two and a half years to cross a sign and nearly thirty to circle the zodiac. Saturn rules time, patience, discipline, work, the elderly and the ordinary people who keep the world running. It is the planet of karma in its plainest sense: what you put in, you get back, in time.

Saturn is feared more than any other graha, and mostly without reason. It is a natural malefic because it delays, restricts and asks for effort, but it is also the planet of justice, and it rewards honesty and hard work more surely than any other. Many people find that their Saturn periods, though demanding, are when they build what lasts.

Where to look

Saturn's house shows where life asks for patience and where, with effort, you build something durable. In the tenth it gives a slow but solid career; in the seventh, a serious or later marriage; in the fourth, responsibility for home or elders. Exalted in Libra it gives fairness and a strong sense of duty; debilitated in Aries its impatience must learn to wait.

In your day

How RitamSage uses it

Saturn's transit over your Moon sign and the signs on either side is Sade Sati, which RitamSage tracks with exact dates. Saturn's transit through other houses from your Moon, including the fourth and eighth (dhaiya), also shapes the longer weather of your days. Saturday and Saturn horas are good for steady, unglamorous work, clearing backlogs and service, and less suited to celebrations.

When strong

A strong Saturn gives patience, endurance, a deep sense of responsibility and the ability to build slowly and well. Such people are reliable, fair and quietly respected, and they often grow stronger with age. Success may come later, but it tends to last.

When tested

When Saturn is under strain, things take longer than they should, effort feels unrewarded and loneliness or tiredness can set in. Saturn asks for honesty, simplicity and steady work rather than shortcuts. Serving the elderly and the poor, and Saturday worship of Hanuman or Shani, are the traditional supports.

Practice

Three simple practices

  1. Light a sesame-oil lamp on Saturday evening, under a peepal tree if you can.
  2. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa or “Om Shanaishcharaya Namah” on Saturdays.
  3. Serve the elderly, workers or anyone in need, quietly and without credit.
