About Surya

Surya is the soul of the chart. In Jyotish the Sun stands for the atma, the self that remains when roles and moods change, and for the qualities that make a person stand upright: confidence, a sense of duty and the willingness to be seen. It is the father, the ruler and the source of light by which every other planet is visible.

The Sun never goes retrograde and never changes its pace much, and that steadiness is its character. It is warm but it is also hot: placed well it gives clarity and dignity; placed under strain it can give pride, friction with authority or a feeling of being unrecognised. Classically it is a mild malefic, not because it harms, but because its heat dries and separates what it touches.

Where to look

Look at the sign and house of your Sun to see where you seek recognition and where you carry responsibility. In the tenth house it turns attention to career and public standing; in the fourth, to home and inner security; in the ninth, to teachers, faith and the father. Its sign shows the style: dignified and generous in Leo, eager in Aries, more yielding and diplomatic in Libra, where it is debilitated.

How RitamSage uses it

RitamSage uses the Sun in several ways. It sets sunrise for your place, which begins the Vedic day and the first hora, always ruled by the weekday's lord, so Sunday's first hour belongs to Surya. The Sun's transit through your chart, counted from your Moon, colours the month, and a Sun mahadasha or antardasha in your Life periods brings its themes of purpose and visibility to the front.

When strong

A well-placed Sun gives a clear sense of direction, good standing with people in authority and the ease to lead without forcing. Such people tend to keep their word, take responsibility naturally and recover their energy quickly. Health is usually robust and the relationship with the father is a source of strength.

When tested

When the Sun is under strain, confidence can come and go, recognition feels slow and dealings with bosses or officials take patience. This is an invitation to build a steadier sense of self that does not depend on praise. Small daily disciplines, rising early and keeping commitments, are the traditional way to strengthen it.

Practice

Three simple practices

  1. Offer water to the rising Sun (arghya) while facing east.
  2. Recite the Aditya Hridayam or simply “Om Suryaya Namah” on Sundays.
  3. Rise before sunrise and honour your father or elders.
