Brihaspati, called Guru, is the teacher of the devas and the greatest natural benefic in Jyotish. Wherever it falls it brings growth, protection and meaning. It rules wisdom as distinct from cleverness, faith, dharma, teachers, children and the kind of wealth that comes from right conduct. Its aspect (drishti) is considered to bless and protect the houses it falls on.
Jupiter moves through one sign in about a year, so its transit marks the chapters of a year. When it is strong in a chart, life tends to carry a sense of support even in hard times. When it is weak, the lesson is to seek out teachers and good counsel rather than trust only oneself. Too much Jupiter, it is said, can make a person overconfident or overgenerous.
