RitamSage

Vedic astrology and music for daily life

Your day has a rhythm. Here is how to hear it.

RitamSage is a mobile app that reads your Vedic birth chart against the sky right now (where the Moon is, the Moon's phase, your birth star and the life period you are in) and gives you one clear level for the day, the reasons behind it, and the best windows to begin what matters. A rhythm, not a verdict.

The word

Ṛtam cosmic order, the true rhythm

Ṛtam (ऋतम्) is the Vedic word for cosmic order: the true rhythm that keeps the sun rising, the Moon waxing and the seasons turning in their time. The Rig Veda names it alongside satya, truth, as something that holds the world together. RitamSage is built on a simple idea from that tradition: your days have a rhythm too, and it is easier to live well when you can hear it.

ऋतं च सत्यं चाभीद्धात्तपसोऽध्यजायत

Order (ṛtam) and truth (satya) were born of kindled fervour.

Rig Veda 10.190.1

In simple words: at the very start, the hymn says, there was heat (tapas), the first spark of creation. From it came order and truth, before night and day, before the sea and the year. That first order is ṛtam, the rhythm RitamSage is named for.

One order, nested: today is one lunar day (tithi) of this Moon’s month, and this month one twelfth of the year. The dots mark now, live for your city.

“A rhythm, not a verdict.”

Why rhythm? Because a rhythm can be heard before it is understood. Music keeps time with the world, which is why the app’s mark is Tumburu, the celestial musician with his tanpura, and why every part of the day in RitamSage has its music, from devotional songs to mantras.

“Quiet days are not bad days. They are the rests in the music.”

The chart · how RitamSage reads you

Watch a chart assemble from nothing.

Scroll slowly. This is today’s real sky over your city, computed in your browser this minute, built the way RitamSage builds yours.

  1. 01 / 07The sky

A point of light becomes a circle.

Every chart begins with one moment and one place: here, your city at this minute. Around that point we draw the whole sky as a circle: 360 degrees along the path the Sun walks in a year.

  2. 02 / 07Twelve signs (rashis)

    Twelve signs of thirty degrees.

Vedic astrology divides the circle into twelve signs, Aries to Pisces, measured against the stars themselves rather than the seasons. That is why your sign here can differ from the one in Western horoscopes: today the two are 24° apart.

  3. 03 / 07The Moon’s 27 stars (nakshatras)

    The Moon’s twenty-seven stars.

Around the signs runs a finer ring of 27 stars, 13°20′ each, from Ashwini to Revati; the Moon passes through about one a day. Right now the Moon is in its star.

  4. 04 / 07Nine planets (grahas)

The nine planets, where they are now.

The Sun and Moon, the five planets you can see, and Rahu and Ketu (the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s) drop into their signs for this minute: the Sun in its sign, the Moon in its sign.

Sun and Moon to the arc-minute; the other planets from mean orbital elements, within a fraction of a degree. Rahu’s place is its average path.

  5. 05 / 07Your chart (kundli)

    The circle squares itself.

The sign rising in the east, the rising sign, becomes the first house at the top, and the wheel turns into the North Indian chart RitamSage draws for you. Each planet settles into its house.

  6. 06 / 07The app

Read against your chart, every morning.

RitamSage reads your own birth chart against this moving sky (where the Moon is, the Moon’s phase, your birth star and the life period you are in) and gives you one level for the day, with the reasons. Charged, Steady, Balanced, Gentle or Rest.

The sky’s rhythm in your city today: …The sky’s rhythm for a place. Your own rhythm needs your birth chart.

  7. 07 / 07The sound

    And then you hear it.

In the app, each part of the day has its music: devotional songs and mantras for your chosen deity. Here, a taste of the hour: in your city it is now this part of the day, and its raga is the raga of the hour, for the deity of the day.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Anything else? Write to ritamsage@gmail.com.

Is this Vedic or Western astrology?

Vedic only. RitamSage measures the signs against the stars (the sidereal zodiac), and uses the Moon's 27 stars (nakshatras), the traditional life periods (Vimshottari dasha) and the Hindu almanac (panchang). Your Moon sign here may differ from the sun sign you know from Western horoscopes, because the two zodiacs are about 24° apart.

Does RitamSage predict what will happen to me?

No. It reads the quality of a day, much as a farmer reads the weather, and suggests how to meet it. A Charged day is a good day to start things; a Rest day is a good day to slow down. What you do with the day is yours.

Why does it need my birth time?

The rising sign changes roughly every two hours and the Moon moves about 13° a day, so a few minutes can change your houses and sometimes the quarter of your birth star. If you do not know your exact time, an approximate one still gives a useful Moon-based reading.

Is it a medical or financial tool?

No. RitamSage is for reflection and timing in the traditional sense. It is not medical, legal or financial advice, and it should never replace a doctor, lawyer or adviser.

When can I download it?

RitamSage is coming to Google Play for Android, available worldwide from the first day, in English. A testing group is open now; an iPhone version will follow later.

What happens to my birth details?

They are used to calculate your chart and your daily readings. The calculation service receives your birth data without your name. You can delete your account and data at any time from Profile → Account → Delete account.
